Dr. Cushing has been providing quality mental health services to the Rockford area for 30 years. During that time he has evaluated and treated thousands of children, adolescents and adults for emotional, behavioral and learning problems. Dr. Cushing does psycho-educational testing on children, adolescents and college students to assess possible learning disabilities, rule out ADHD, and determine the presence or extent of mood, nervous or disruptive behavioral difficulties. He also performs psychological evaluations on adults to help determine the nature of their problems and assess depression, anxiety, PTSD, adult ADHD, and other emotional problems.

Dr. Cushing counsels children, adolescents and adults using a brief, solution-focused approach to effectively treat most emotional, behavioral and relationship problems. Marital therapy and family counseling, including parent training in using behavior management strategies, are also offered.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST:

1979 to present: Private Practice: Glenwood Center, Rockford, Illinois:. Providing full range of psychological services including psychological testing, individual, group, family and couples counseling to patients from ages 2 to 95. Specialties include Child Psychology (ADHD & Learning Disability evaluations and treatment), Forensic Psychology (evaluations of criminal defendants), Sex Offender treatment and evaluations, Child Custody/Visitation Evaluations, Sport Psychology and general adolescent and adult psychology.

PSYCHOLOGY INSTRUCTOR:

1973-present: Taught on a variety of psychological topics as an Instructor at Universities including Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Cross Country University and others. Also have traveled nationwide to provide training in Anger Management and Forensic Psychology to thousands of psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, teachers, lawyers, probation officers and other professionals.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST:

Harlem School District, Machesney Park, Illinois: 1973-1980. Provided psychological services of assessment and treatment to students from ages 2 to 21: preschool, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Chief psychologist and developed and supervised School Psychology Internship program. Provided training to teachers, administrators, counselors and other pupil personnel staff. Developed, wrote grants for and administered Alternative High School Program for displaced youth.

COACH:

1980-2002: Coached Basketball at the Youth, Middle School, High School and Junior College levels including coaching in the Illinois High School AA State Championship game in 1993 at Guilford H.S., Rockford, Illinois.

PSYCHOMETRIST:

1975-1979: Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment Center: Rockford, Illinois: Administered cognitive, emotional, behavioral, forensic and disability testing to clients.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST INTERN:

The Ohio State University in association with Columbus Public Schools: 1972-73. Evaluated and treated school age children from ages 3-21. Tested and provided individual and group psychotherapy to regular education and special education students including ADHD, L.D., Behavior Disordered, Emotionally Disturbed, Gifted, Mild, Moderate, Severe and Profoundly Retarded students, and physically and neurologically disabled students. Also provided teacher training on psychological problems, parent conferencing and classroom accommodations for ADHD and other handicaps.
